Acupuncture
A cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural healing process by activating the central nervous system. This holistic therapy supports physical, mental, and emotional well-being, offering a balanced approach to health.
Acupuncture Overview
Acupuncture, an ancient practice rooted in TCM, has been used for thousands of years in China and across Eastern cultures. Early practitioners discovered that inserting fine needles in specific anatomical points could effectively address a wide range of health concerns. Over the course of 2,000 years, these points have been meticulously mapped, forming the foundation of acupuncture practice today. Treatments often incorporate complementary modalities such as cupping, moxibustion, and blood stasis therapy, creating a comprehensive approach to healing.
The Foundation of Acupuncture
At the core of acupuncture lies the belief that the body contains pathways, called meridians, through which qi and blood flow. These channels, like a network of highways, transport qi (pronounced “chee”), which is a form of bioelectricity. The smooth flow of qi is essential for optimal health. When disruptions occur—similar to a kink in a hose—symptoms arise. By stimulating these pathways with acupuncture, balance is restored, allowing the body to heal naturally.
Why Patients Seek Acupuncture
People turn to acupuncture for a variety of reasons. Its minimally invasive nature, low risk of side effects, and ability to activate the body’s self-healing mechanisms make it an appealing alternative to pharmaceutical treatments. Acupuncture is widely recognized for its effectiveness in addressing both physical and emotional conditions, offering a gentle, comprehensive way to enhance overall health.
Relief
Acupuncture is renowned for its ability to provide effective relief, particularly when conventional treatments have not yielded results. One of the primary reasons people seek acupuncture is for pain relief or chronic pain management. By targeting specific acupoints, acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins, improves circulation, and alleviates conditions such as lower back pain, migraines and arthritis. More frequent sessions are typically required during this relief phase of treatment.
Stabilization
Once discomfort is reduced, we focus on extending the time between treatments. Continued care during this phase supports the ongoing healing process while helping the body consolidate its improvements and prevent regression. This cumulative approach is particularly beneficial for chronic conditions like digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, menstrual irregularities, and autoimmune issues. By strengthening resilience and enhancing overall well-being, acupuncture supports long-term health and vitality.
Prevention
Regular acupuncture treatments can function as preventative care, identifying and addressing imbalances before they develop into more serious conditions. For chronic or recurring issues, periodic follow-ups, ranging from weekly to monthly visits, may be necessary to maintain balance and overall wellness. Many patients find value in their treatment and frequently come in for physical, mental, and emotional “tune-ups.”
Acupuncture at Balance Point Health
At Balance Point Health, each treatment begins with a thorough assessment of your health concerns. Acupuncture needles are placed strategically to stimulate bioelectric energy and restore balance. In addition to acupuncture, we may use complementary techniques such as cupping or bleeding to enhance the healing process. Our approach targets key areas of the body, including the brain’s pain perception centers, providing lasting relief for conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome and lower back pain.
Preparing for Your Treatment
Before your first acupuncture treatment, it’s important to consult with a licensed and certified practitioner. During the initial visit, we’ll discuss your medical history, current treatments, and medications to ensure an effective, personalized treatment plan. For your safety, we use only single-use, sterile needles.
How the Process Works
Acupuncture treatments are cumulative, with each session building upon the last. A typical treatment course includes about 10 visits, though this may vary depending on your specific needs. Consistency is key to achieving the best results, so we encourage patients to commit to the prescribed treatment plan.
Scientific Insights
Modern research supports the effectiveness of acupuncture, showing physiological changes such as increased blood flow, higher neural pain thresholds, the release of endorphins and enhanced immune function. Imaging techniques like PET scans have shown increased activity in brain regions associated with pain perception, providing scientific validation for the therapeutic effects of acupuncture.
Common Concerns
Does it hurt?
Most patients find acupuncture to be painless. The needles are as thin as a human hair, and you may experience mild sensations like warmth, heaviness, or tingling as qi is activated. Many people report feeling deeply relaxed and even fall asleep during their treatments.
Are needles reused?
No. We strictly adhere to health regulations and use only single-use, factory-sterilized needles for every treatment.

Please complete the New Patient Intake form before your first treatment, and arrive a few minutes early to sign any additional paperwork. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to treatment areas, such as the arms and legs.
Scheduling and Treatment Frequency
For most conditions, 2-3 treatments per week for several weeks is ideal. Chronic issues may require longer treatment courses, while acute conditions often resolve more quickly. Regular follow-ups are recommended to maintain progress.
Appointment Details
The first visit includes a comprehensive consultation and treatment, lasting about 90 minutes. Follow-up sessions typically last 45-60 minutes. To ensure consistency, it’s best to schedule your appointments in advance, and please notify us in case of any cancellations to avoid possible fees.
